Product selection help

any different tapes are on the market, with estimates ranging form 200 to 400 different varieties. Tapes may be classified according to construction, function or to use. According their construction they may be subdivided into the following categories: fabric tapes, paper tapes, film tapes, foil tapes, non woven fabric tapes, reinforced tapes, foam tapes, double-face tapes and transfer tapes. As is obvious form the preceding list, the backing, rather than the adhesive provides the main distinction among various tapes. So the PSA tapes consist of two components: Backing and Adhesive. The purpose of the adhesive is to secure the backing to another surface in order to perform some function; Very important and mostly decisive for the right choice is to know the properties of the available backings, not only their advantages but also their disadvantages.

It is therefore that Carlisle Hardcast Europe B.V. offers the customer a selection guide with various backings in combination with a rubber adhesive.

 Backing material  Advantages  Disadvanages
PVC
  • flexible

  • acid resistance

  • good conformability

  • some recovery after stretch

  • poor flexibility at low temperature

  • temp. resistance up to 75°C

Polyethylene

  • excellent conformability

  • acid resistance

  • economical

  • memory effect
  • limited temp resistance

Polyester
  • good abrasion resistance

  • tensile strength

  • solvent resistance (most)

  • tears easily when edge is cut

  • application difficult because of thinness and high static

Metal foil
  • good moisture barrier

  • good heat reflective

  • high temp resistance

  • outdoor weathering

  • poor flexibility

  • poor acid resistance

  • hardly no elongation

  • bad conformability

NonWoven fabric
  • easy to overpaint

  • can be impregnated

  • poor adhesion to backing

  • poor flexibility

Cloth fabric
(with PE coating)
  • high tensile strength

  • flexible

  • tears easily across or lengthwise

  • excellent moisture barrier

  • poor conformability
